Why use Bromine instead of Chlorine?

For many years, chlorine has been used in the disinfecting of swimming pools, spas, and fountains because it was plentiful and inexpensive. Recently however, chlorine has come under attack from environmentalists and the government and bromine has been mentioned as an alternative.

The Benefits of using Bromine over Chlorine

Disinfecting ability not affected by bather wastes (ammonia) - Need to shock less!

Much less pH dependent - easier to keep water balanced and use less at high pH!

Bromine and bromamines have no odor - significant reduction in eye, nose, hair, and throat irritation so it works great indoors and in fountains!

Does not gas off - much more effective in fountains and hot water applications such as spas and indoor pools.

Bromine is an algaecide, chlorine an algae stat - in normal pool operating conditions, bromine will kill algae while chlorine may only prevent it from growing.

Significantly lower corrosion rate - bromine is 1/3 to 1/2 as corrosive as chlorine at equal effectiveness levels so pool equipment and surfaces last longer.

Unlimited shelf life - chlorine products have shelf lives of between 1 month and 3 years.

Safer to handle and store - safer to transport and does not require special handling procedures, placards, or storage.
