Comma Separated Values File (.csv or .txt)
Very Important!
Data Base Administration using CSV can be used to quickly update and back up the Data Base. In order to use this function successfully, rules must be followed when creating new entries and editing old ones. These rules are STRICT and not following them to the letter can mean disaster for the data base, and the website. If you are unsure of what you are doing, please use the Data Base Administration tools provided instead.
CSV Layout
The layout of a Comma Separated File is dependant upon the Data Base table it represents. Each comma separated value on a line corresponds to a column in the table, both on the Data Base and in a spreadsheet into which the CSV is imported. On all of the Eco-$mart Data Base Tables, there is an id number appearing first on every line. This number must not be changed! It is a primary key that makes it possible for tables to interact. If you are creating a new entry using a CSV, leave this column blank. (The line for that product will start with a comma.) An ID number will be automatically generated by the Data Base for the new entry.
Do Not Use Replace with Code:
, (comma) Use space, _ , - , or ( ) instead.
" (double quote) Use in. or inches instead.
' (single quote) Use ft. or feet instead.
Getting a CSV file from the Data Base:
1. Click "Get CSV" for the appropriate table.
2. A new window will open and the CSV will appear.
3. Right-Click and click "Select All".
4. Click Copy or CTRL+C.
5. Paste into any text editor like Notepad or equivalent.
6. Save as "filename.txt" or "filename.csv" in PLAIN TEXT.
7. The file is now ready to import into Excel or other spread sheet.
8. Close the CSV Webpage.
Please note: It is recommended that you get a CSV from the Data Base before uploading or updating with the steps below. You will then have an opportunity to see what a CSV should look like. It is also a good idea to get a CSV to import into your spreadsheet. Making adjustments to the import and then saving as a CSV will ensure that the file will be compliant with CSV Rules.
Uploading a CSV file:
1. Be sure the csv or txt file you are using complies with all rules above.
2. Browse to the folder and file where the file is located and open it.
3. Click "Send CSV".
4. A status page will open with notification of success or failure.
